POETRY MIND MAPPING
Forgotten Voices Poetry Group

Workshop at the Indian Valley Public Library - November 20th 2008

In the center circle, put the key word of your topic. Write several other associated words or ideas in surrounding circles and draw lines connecting them to the center circle. Write words associated with each one of those and place them in nearby circles, connected with lines. You may have any number of related or clustered words. They can be key words for your poem, or anything related to your topic or emotion. Select a cluster and write about it. Continue with another cluster, and create another poem! The Parking Lot is where we put all the words that came up after the "Spider Web" was complete.

Zoom in on 'Spider Web'

Poems from the Mind Map Workshop:

Group Poem:
A Halloween Spider Web

by Carol Cutajar, Gregory Cutajar, Audrey Cutajar, Marilyn Gross, and Joanne Leva

On Halloween night
We trick or treat
We don't eat ice cream
candy still tastes great
good costumes, masks and
hoods
pillow cases full of
bottle caps
chocolate
lollipops
and ginger snaps

"Boo!" says a scary ghost
in the haunted house
the doorbell plays
"Ding dong
the witch is dead"
costumes
black cats
witches wearing big black hats
a full moon shines
and a big black bat
flies in the night sky
just as people
say, "Good-bye."

A Black Cat
by Marilyn Gross

A black cat's eyes glowing in the dark,
The hoot of an owl,
A dog begins to bark.
A full moon shining up in the sky,
The cackle of a witch as she flies by.
Trick-or-treaters carry bags full of treats.
Gypsies, ghosts and monsters walking
Through our streets.
As I ring a doorbell
Someone shouts out "Boo!"
I run for home and slam the door.
Halloween is through!

Find It
by Sarah Gross

Bushes here and there, pies everywhere!
5,000 apples on my teacher's desk,
All the walls painted different colors.
Only centimeters on our class rulers instead of inches,
Things walking on our heads.
Do you know what those things are on our heads?
CATERPILLARS!!!  Ewwwwww ......
Muddy tracks on the walls
Here at our fall Halloween party.
The Halloween flags standing tall.

On Halloween Night
by Audrey Cutajar

On Halloween night
I went trick or treating
I got lots of candy
Knocking
On doors
And at last
The night has ended
Time to say goodbye.
Happy Halloween!

Super Spooky Halloween
by Gregory Cutajar

On Halloween we don't eat ice cream
That is for the summer, and if
You don't get candy then that
Is just a bummer. One black cat,
Seven flying bats
They both make a scary noise, and if you catch
One, now know that they're not toys. If
You see a witch on her flying broom
If she comes inside your house
You should get out of that room.
And if there is a pail white ghost
Who loves to say, "Boo!" and
If he says that he really might
Scare you you might
Hear a noise of a big
Black owl, and some time
You may hear a dog
Howl.
On Halloween we eat pumpkin pie, if
You don't have trick-or-treat for
Yummy candy nice
And sweet. It is time
For the parade, stillsome summer
Lemonade. Inside
The haunted house there is
Just one big black mouse.
Orange pumpkins no
Bananas riding cowboys
With bandanas
A big black spider hanging down
Tons of dust on the ground.
Cob webs
Broken windows
Spooky
Shadows
Spooky monsters big and mean
Some of them
Are painted green.
Now that's the end of
Halloween!
